Kouroush Yaghmaei is regarded as the Godfather of Iranian psychedelic rock. Heavily influenced by artists such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Pink Floyd, Kouroush was known for his unique fusion of traditional Persian folk ballads with contemporary lyrics. Gaining prominence in the early 1970s, his career came to an abrupt halt in 1979 amid the Iranian Revolution, criminalizing all music deemed ‘un-Islamic.’ Quite literally, he went from national rockstar to enemy of the state practically overnight.
32 years later, Kouroush was able finally re-published his music, releasing his debut compilation, “Back from the Brink: Pre-Revolution Psychedelic Rock from Iran: 1973–1979.” Now 76 years old, Kouroush lives in Tehran and plans on releasing new music in the future.
In the contemporary realm, Koroush is a well known artist amongst music enthusiasts. Sampled by artists like Nas, Freddie Gibbs, and Kali Uchis, his music resonates still today. Despite this, his personal career has faded into obscurity.
